Fungal keratitis and contact lenses: what all patients should know.
In April 2006, Bausch and Lomb suspended production of Renu contact lens solutions and asked retailers to voluntarily remove their products from store shelves. This was done in response to a report of an increased number of cases of Fusarium keratitis, a fungal eye disease. In 109 cases of Fusarium keratitis, 28 were contact lens wearers, and 26 of those either used Renu or Renu in combination with another solution.
Renu contact lens solution has not been shown to cause Fusarium keratitis, however we are recommending all our patients at least temporarily discontinue use of Renu until research shows whether or not Renu is effective at preventing this fungal eye disease. We are also advocating ceasing use of any and all generic contact lens solutions. When you purchase a generic solution, you could be purchasing any of a number of types of solution, including Renu.
We are often asked by our patients what they should do about preventing the development of this fungal eye disease. The following is a list of recommendations from the American Optometric Association for all contact lens wearers to ensure good eye health:
Carefully and regularly clean contact lenses, as directed by an optometrist and the patient information included with lens care products.
Rub the contact lenses with fingers and rinse thoroughly before soaking the lenses overnight in enough multi-purpose solution to completely cover the lens.
Use the proper products to clean and disinfect contact lenses as recommended by your optometrist. Remember that saline solutions and rewetting drops are not designed to disinfect lenses.
Store lenss in the proper case and replace the lens storage case every three months. Clean the contact lens case after each use and keep the case open and dry between cleanings.
Only fresh solution should be used to clean and disinfect contact lenses. Never re-use old solution. Contact lens solution must be changed every day, even if the lenses are not used daily.
